RebateMango e-commerce platform offers multiple rewards

Consumers choose cashback, airline miles or loyalty points

By Peter Clark, Marketing Factbook

South East Asian shoppers have been offered new ways to earn a variety of rewards from their online purchases through RebateMango - an e-commerce platform that rather generously offers its shoppers a choice of cash back, airline miles (from various airlines) or straight-forward loyalty points.

In fact, apart from the perhaps obvious choice of earning cash back for their purchases, shoppers using RebateMango can choose instead to earn airline miles from KrisFlyer Miles, Malaysian Airlines's Enrich Miles, AirAsia's BIG Points, or Cebu Pacific's GetGo Points, as well as other popular regional loyalty points from programs such as CapitaSTAR$ and Changi Rewards. These are in addition to the credit card-based rewards that members will already be earning with every transaction.

The one-year-old startup boasts over 300 online retailers across Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, including Lazada, Asos, Sephora, iHerb, Agoda and more. It also counts Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, HSBC, UOB and DBS Bank amongst its 17 big-brand partners. Led by founders Paul Koh and Jesper Kauth, RebateMango bridges the gap between disparate loyalty earning platforms, and shoppers after greater value and convenience.

Addressing what the company views as an "industry lack of cash back sites" in the region, and the demand from airlines that are seeking to offer their loyalty miles for lifestyle transactions other than flights, the pair identified an untapped opportunity while they were working together at Agoda.

RebateMango aggregates product listings from some of the largest local and global retailers online. It then earns a commission from each sale, the value of which is passed back to shoppers in the form of cashback, airline miles or loyalty points.

When shoppers visit, they simply select the reward they prefer, then shop from a store list that covers everything from fashion and beauty, to travel and electronics. Once they complete a transaction, the reward will automatically be credited into their accounts.

Shoppers can also earn 'Mangoes': extra points to reach Green, Yellow and Gold Mango Statuses that give up to additional 10% cashback, airline miles or loyalty points in total for every dollar spent.

The platform seeks to utilise data analytics for online and offline purchases, and to track the rewards earned from both. So it better understands consumer behaviour in a deal-hungry region.

To date, the company has raised in excess of US$700,000 in seed funding. Since the round closed, it has seen a 300% month-on-month growth in total sales from April to July 2018. Investments from present and future rounds of funding will be channeled towards enhancements to both its website and mobile app. They will also aid expansion plans into other markets in the region, such as the Philippines and Indonesia.

"Currently, other rewards sites only offer either cash back or airline miles," explained Koh. "By marrying both into a single platform, shoppers can not only choose where they want to shop, but how they want to benefit from their spending."
